Author Interview: Belle Whittington

Please welcome Belle Whittington to my blog today! Come learn about her writing and her.

1) Tell us about yourself! When did you start writing? Why? Who inspired you?

I have been daydreaming stories for as long as I can remember.  My first recollection of wanting to be a writer was when I was in the second grade, and my teacher, Mrs. Rambin, would have us lay our heads on our desks after lunch while she read us stories full of magic and imagination.

Most of my early writings were stories with a twist of science fiction…even my earliest poems.  I remember sitting on the dam of a neighbor’s pond around the time I was eleven, writing a story about space travel.  In fact, I still have that little handwritten story.  It’s still bound in the same yellow notebook that I put it in way back in the sixth grade!

Growing up in Nacogdoches, the oldest town in Texas, afforded me summers full of adventure with my friends.  I call on those adventures and memories a great deal for my YA stories.  CICADA has a lot of the energy of those childhood adventures spun throughout.  One of them is something that actually happened to me when I was thirteen years old.  I was on one of my adventures in the woods with my dog, Dusty.  We made our way through the woods to a neighboring pasture and crawled through the barbed wire fence.

When we got to the top of one of the rolling hills in the grassy field, I realized I was standing in the middle of a giant circle imprinted in the pasture grass.  No one had ever told me about crop circles at that time in my life, so I just thought it was an odd occurrence that there was a strange circle in the tall grass.   Now that circle is forever memorialized in a YA novel, CICADA!

2) What is your newest release (Or upcoming)? Tell us a little bit about it.

My newest release is titled FIREFLY.  It’s the second book in a trilogy and released in February 2013.  I’m currently finishing up the third book, which is titled MONARCH.  It willbelle_cover release in the summer of 2014.  I cannot wait for my readers to get their hands on this book.  It’s been tough book to write, but it will answer every secret my readers have had since they first picked up a copy of CICADA.  I won’t say that all the characters will be privy to all the secrets, though.

Another thing I’m excited about when I finish MONARCH is that I’ll be able to start another project that been bugging me for the past year.

4) What is your least favorite part about being an author?

I love every aspect of being an author.  I guess that if I had to list something, it would be the fact that I cannot write every single book all at the same time.

5) Are you an Indie Author, Hybrid, or Traditional? What lead you to this choice?

I’m an Indie Author.  I suppose the reason I chose this path is that I’ve been an Indie in almost everything I’ve done in life.  I love doing things my own way.  Maybe if I was better at writing query letters, I’d be traditionally published! LOL!

6) Do you have any hobbies?

I enjoy reading and watching movies.  I don’t watch a lot of TV, though.  I love surfing the web, too.  I’m a research/information junkie, and the Internet gives me that fix.

7) Do you work on a schedule? Are you better working under pressure?

I wish I could say that I work on a schedule.  But the truth is that I uncover the story bit by bit as it presents itself.  So, there are some days when I don’t write at all … not in the way that most people think of writing.  Those days, I’m daydreaming, searching for the path the story and characters want to take.

Working under pressure is probably one of the best ways to bring out creativity to finish or complete a project for me.

8) Where do you see yourself in five years as an author?

In five years, I plan to see at least one of my books on the NY Times Best Sellers List.

9) If you could chose any of the ‘realities’ you write to live in, which world would you choose?

I would choose the reality of my current books. :)
