Sisterhood of the Traveling Blog: Blog 4

Patricia Laffoon provides an excerpt from the work in progress “The Realmwalker Prophecy: Heart of the Mermaid” by Aaron Speca and Patricia Laffoon, and talks about what this particular passage means to her…

When writing this part of Rudy and Trish's story I pulled from a part of my own life when I had to make a decision that would affect the course of my life. This chapter not only speaks to the great love and devotion to Rudy that Trish has, but the cruelty that one can show in mindless pursuit of power. Aaron the Merman, whom Trish is bound to marry by her Father’s decree, is one of her father’s most trusted guards, but his own greed and what lengths he will go to for his own personal gains becomes apparent in these chapters.

Excerpt from “The Realmwalker Prophecy: Heart of the Mermaid”, a work in progress:

His voice trembled with rage. “Do not lie to me! You had a male here, I could smell him on you as soon as I arrived! Now where is he?”

“No! No, Aaron I swear there was no male here.” She tasted the blood in her mouth from where he had struck her. Her mind was spinning; she couldn't believe this was happening.

“You lie!” He grabbed her and dragged her out the doorway, headed up to the tavern. “Your father told me to deal with you however I needed to, and I shall. You will tell me the truth!”

She trembled and pleaded with him. “Aaron, please don’t do this!” He pulled her into the empty saloon, throwing her onto the floor.

His eyes burned into her like fire. “You know the penalty for harboring and consorting with a human, yet you took it upon yourself to do so, and lie to me about it!” He struck her again as she tried to get up. “Tell me the truth and I will let this go.”

She shook her head. “I swear to you there was no one here but me.”

“So be it!!” He tore a piece of cloth off of her own skirt and yanked her to her feet, using it to bind her hands together.

“No! No, Aaron, please don’t do this thing!”

He held her wrists with one huge hand, using the other to free the whip at his waist. “You have but to tell me the truth and this will all be over.”

“I told you the truth,” she spat at him. With a growl, he pulled her to the rope that typically held bags of flour, tied her hands to it, and pulled until she was suspended, her toes just touching the floor. Then he tied the end off to hold her there. All the while she struggled, but he was just too strong. He walked in front of her and tilted her head up with the butt end of the whip.

“This is your last chance. Tell me the truth and I will cut you down.”

She glared at him with defiance. “I told you the truth,” she said through gritted teeth.

He nodded, smiling almost gleefully as he walked behind her and ripped the back of her sarong to expose the tender flesh of her back. She heard the crack of the whip before she felt it, the searing pain biting into her skin. She felt the trickle of blood run down her back and towards her legs. She tried not to cry out, but the sound escaped her lips nonetheless. She had made her decision. She would not betray Rudy, would not give Aaron the opportunity to pursue him.

She felt his breath in her ear. “Tell me the truth.”

She shook her head again, tears streaming down her face. “I told you the truth, there was no one here.”

The whip cracked in the air again, and she sagged under the pain. He asked over and over again, and she answered the same every time, her back more raw with each blow. She finally begged for mercy, but still did not reveal her secret to him.
