Sisterhood of the Traveling Blog: Blog One

Day one of the Sisterhood of the Traveling blog is an interview with Ashley Nemer. I hope you enjoy, and please check out her website and her writing as well! (Links below)

  1. What made you start writing and which subject matter do you enjoy the most?

    1. I stated writing because one day I just had to let go of some frustration that had been building inside of me. My first works were poems. I’ve never written many happy poems but usually they are dark or sad. I find that when I am angry and need to vent poetry is my best source. I feel the freedom to say what I mean and not be ashamed. Because of all these reasons I would say Poetry is my favorite subject to write.

  2. Is there anything that you write about that can be controversial?

    1. Maybe. My second book in the Blood Series dives more into the Algula Vampire and what makes them, them. They were created by the Gods and in turn the Algula created humans. Some people might find that … wrong. Others might see that I correlate all the major historical items of our world with the Algula and their influence, making humans weak and easily manipulated a bit harsh. What I’m using for inspiration are things I think are observed every day, I’m just simply making them more, amped up.

  3. What inspires you to write and how often do you do it?

    1. I write as much as I can and ANYHING can inspire me. Usually I need something that causes some sort of emotion inside of me for my deeper, darker writings but I love just sitting down at the laptop and typing on the keys. I never ever know what is going to come out, it’s always a surprise. I remember after two hours of writing one night when I was done I started at the screen and was like, “Um, wtf, okay wow.” This was when Dominic ‘s last scene in Blood Purple happened. (Last as in last time he’s mentioned in that book.) I think it was Chapter 29 or 30. I just sat there and thought to myself, “Really, this is what I want to put?” I kept it but I am still shocked I took that route. I did NOT see that coming when I created the character and started his path. I think that’s what I love most about writing my fiction is I really don’t plan much. Like I have points A and Z in my head and I know what I want it to end with but getting there…it’s as much of a surprise to me writing it as you reading it.

  4. If you could only take one book with you for the next year what would it be and why?

    1. Well I could be sneaky and say I’m taking my Kindle, which contains over 400 books…BUT I’ll play fair. If I had to take one book with me it would be Tami Hoag’s Dark Paradise, I can never get enough of JD Raferty … If I had to have a ‘book boyfriend’ (as one of my friends calls them) it would be him.

  5. Is there a particular character of yours that you like more than the rest?

    1. Right now I have two characters that I’m jonesing for. 1-Leigh Khaled. She’s one of my antagonists in the Blood Series and I massively love her. If you love a woman who knows what she wants, takes what she wants and says F-you o the world and conquers it despite the odds, then she is your woman. Yeah, again when I wrote her I HAD NO IDEA I was going to love her. And my Beta readers love her too!
Next would be Nadia Maverick. I am 5000 words into her story but I’m lovin the OCD news reporter chick. She kind reminds me of April O’Neal from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in a way. Always getting into trouble and seeking to know more more more.

  1. Who is your favorite fictional character and why?

    1. SO HARD!!!! ~growls and thinks~ I have no honest idea. I have SO SO SO MANY!!! First there is JD Raferty *points up* then there is Dillon Savich who is the head of a special crime unit for the FBI in Catherine Coulter’s series. Then there is Bishop and his team in Kay Hooper’s psychic FBI thriller series. Then of course Azura, Noir, Stryker and Vane from Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunters. Let’s not forget Vishous, Zsadist, Rehvenge and Rhage from J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood. Oh there is also V’Lane from Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. Hell, don’t make me choose!!! OH! Then there is Rachel Morgan, Ivy and Jenks from Kim Harrison’s The Hollows series. UGH, yeah I’mma pass on this one there is clearly to many to choose.

  2. What age did you start reading, did you have a favorite children’s book?

    1. I read R.L. Stein, the Baby Sitters Club, V.C. Andrews growing up but my favorite book would be, The Phantom Tollbooth. LOVED IT! Was my first big kid’s book.

  3. What's the best part of being an author?

    1. My characters give me he escape I need to be happy. Not that my life is bad, I have a fantastic life, but we all have ideas in our heads and thoughts pent up. When I write I get to create life on the pages. Nothing is better than that.

  4. If your current book (published or work in progress) could become a movie who would star in it?

    1. No Clue! I am still trying to figure out a way to make a character that Will Smith could play. Honestly no idea but I would have one request to the movie makers if and when this happens…that they find people who are of Arabic decent play my main characters, Zayn, Nikole, Nasir, Haydar, Dominic, Leigh, Derrik. I’d like that to stay true to form, otherwise, I’d leave it in their good hands.

  5. Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now, writing wise?

    1. NY Times Best Seller list, YEAH! Haha, kinda kidding. Mean I want to always aim for the starts right but in reality I would like to see that my hobby at least funds itself. I’d like to sell enough books to pay for my promotions and the expenses I incur making the trailers and such. I feel like in order to say I am a successful published author I at least need to stay in the ‘black’ so to speak, finance wise.

  6. Anything extra you want to add….

    1. I’m in love with this journey and I am so pleased that you have taken the time to travel it with me.

  1. Thanks so much for hosting my interview!!!

  2. After the amazing journey of Blood Purple, I can't wait to see what you've come up with in Bud's Christmas. I remember reading your inspirations behind that (I think it was on your author fb page) and it sounds like it will be an awesome piece to read.
